Windows provide light, warmth and ventilation to our homes. But now, your choice of windows is critical to reducing energy costs and controlling the amount of heat entering and leaving your building.
Older windows are a growing concern because they don’t meet today’s stricter building regulations. Heat escapes when you need it most and comes in when you least need it.
Old windows don’t always mean bad luck. Using storm windows, caulking, weather stripping, and window treatments or coverings can improve the energy efficiency of your windows. However, in older buildings with inefficient windows, it may be more cost-effective to replace the windows.
Modern, energy-efficient windows are an investment that can save on lighting, heating and cooling costs, and reduce the level of noise reaching the building.
The correct glass
An almost invisible coating improves the window’s resistance to heat flux, increasing its insulating value while maximizing the amount of light that enters.
Double glazed windows
The ideal energy saving solution is to reduce all forms of heat transfer. Double glazing is considered the go-to for all high performance windows in hot, cold and mixed climates.
In the most efficient double glazing, argon gas is located between the layers of glass, providing the best thermal performance.
The narrowest air gap used in double glazing is 6mm, but this should be avoided unless there is no other option. Using a wider gap (10-20mm) will improve the U-value.
Window frames
To complement the glass system, quality window frames are essential. Aluminium is recommended as it is strong, easy to clean, durable and long lasting.
Timber is often used in buildings that want to preserve their history and structural integrity, but it is not energy efficient and requires the most maintenance. UPVC is a cheaper alternative and arguably the most energy efficient of all window frames. However, it is not as good at handling hot items as aluminium. This means it is no longer hot in winter and cool in summer. In addition, their manufacture requires significant chemical production and environmental impacts.
